You just need to know exactly what you want in a news app. If you prefer ease of access, then the likes of Zite would suite you, but if you want conciseness, TrendOY! is just what you have been looking for. The app allows users to flip through news stories about gaming, technology and entertainment, describing each news item in a headline of 140 characters or less.
The limited choice of categories might seem like a big drawback, but to be fair, these three categories are the ones most of us geeks are interested in. And by the looks of it, more categories might be added to the app soon. TrendOY! starts up with a step-by-step guide to its features. TrendOY! has a refreshingly good interface, and it supports landscape mode as well. The way it displays news feeds in portrait and landscape orientation differs greatly. In portrait mode, the interface looks like that of a run-of-the-mill reader, while shifting to landscape orientation turns the news feed into a slideshow of headlines. The app looks like it would be perfect for an iPad, but surprisingly, it does not have a tablet-exclusive version yet.
The app does allow you to read full stories at their sources, but its primary purpose is to provide you with a quick heads-up on the latest happenings. The app sports a search feature to make it easy for the user to look for stories of interest and allows you to enable/disable push notifications for selective categories or all headlines.
You can add any story to your Favorites list, bookmark it, or share it over Facebook, Twitter, email and SMS. The app also features a badges system, where you are awarded for achieving certain milestones. For example, using your Facebook account to like any article on TrendOY! will unlock one badge, and opening the app for a specific number of times will give you another.
